PULSE OF A NATION

The film encapsulates the changing dynamics of population issues over the decade of the nineties in India. It is based on the findings of the National Family Health Surveys - 1 & 2 (NFHS), which were conducted under the aegis of USAID, India, ORC Macro (Washington), Population Reference Bureau (Washington) and the Indian Institute of Population Sciences (India).

The films give a status of the issue of population growth in Madhya Pradesh in its social and implementation context. The thrust of these films was to essentially utilise the Hindi version at the village level through the Panchayati Raj Institutions (democratically elected village councils).

These spots, with population messages, were made for dissemination of information in a popular mode. Four zonal styles of folk music and singers were identified for this purpose. And the messages were blended into the basic style and structure of the folk songs.




"GIFT OF THE GODDESS" (2000-2001)

The film views the status of the Ganga down from the Gangotri Glacier to Kanpur and Varanasi. It is a sojourn with Veer Bhadra Misra, a scientist, temple priest and environmental activist and Rakesh Jaiswal, an environmentalist fighting legal battles. It weaves a world of devotion for the Ganges as goddess, with the reality of pollution and a rapidly receding glacier.

The films have been made for discussion groups of policy makers and grassroot workers. It highlights the new population policy of Rajasthan in context of holistic development and the need to concentrate on client-orientation in family welfare programmes.

ON THE FENCE

On the occassion of 25 years of the environmental movement, Chipko, the film revisits the Kumaon-Garhwal region in the northern Himalaya. It emphasises the active role of women in this grass-roots movement, which has been one of the major factors for its success.

This is an information film about the Montreal Protocol, to which India is also a signatory. The aim was to create awareness within different groups of people in India about the implications of the treaty and future action. The film targetted small and medium industries who manufacture and use CFCs.

This current affairs programme traverses 3 different regions of India to examine the phenomenon of growing population and the problems in tackling its growth. It is an appraisal of the Family Planning programme of India, with relevance to the socio-cultural, economic and geographical status of various regions.

The Bishnois of Rajasthan in western India are one of the oldest ecologically-aware, practising environmentalists in India. Four of their 29 religious tenets are related to environmental beliefs.





END OF THE TRAIL (1988)

The programme is about Himalayan shepherds who follow the cycle of transhumance. The family of this particular shepherd, (like others) has followed the same trail for many generations upto 14,000 ft. every summer. These ecologically-aware pastoralists now face grazing problems in winter due to increased cultivation and new forest- protection policies. Young shepherds are faced with difficult choices between traditional practices and the viability of survival.

The film deals with the problems tribals face when made to change over to settled agriculture. Shifting cultivation, a common practice among the tribals of Central India, was maintained with traditional wisdom. Increased population and external pressures have convoluted the sensibility of shifting cultivation practices.
